Root Canal Q & A

What is a smile makeover?

The goal of a root canal is to alleviate pain and save an infected tooth. Dr. Hurtado eliminates the bacteria and any dead or dying tissue from inside your tooth if it becomes severely infected. Doing so lets him get rid of your pain and preserve your tooth.

What leads to an infection in the tooth root?

Tissue and roots inside of your teeth can get infected with bacteria due to injury to the tooth or from a cavity that remains untreated for too long. The infected tissue can develop inside the pulp or root of your tooth if you neglect to go to the dentist. If the infection develops any further this can lead to many other issues, so make sure you seek help.

How can I recognize an infected tooth?

An infected tooth can become very painful relatively quickly, especially if you don’t take care of it promptly. Some typical symptoms of an infected tooth include:

  • Inflamed gums
  • Tooth soreness when eating and drinking
  • Extreme tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Unpleasant breath
  • Pus coming from around the tooth
  • Painful throbbing in your jaw or mouth
  • Tooth darkening in color
  • A small pimple-like bump on your gum

What's involved in a root canal?

Dr. Hurtado can usually fix your tooth within one or two visits. You may first need digital X-rays so he can judge the magnitude of damage to the tooth needing a root canal.

At your appointment, Dr. Hurtado utilizes a syringe to administer local anesthetic and numb the region. Every now and then, he sets a dental dam, or a little piece of rubber, on your tooth to preserve its cleanliness and protect it from bacteria during the procedure. Once your tooth is anesthetized, Dr. Hurtado creates a tiny opening in your tooth to reach the infection inside the root.

Next, Dr. Hurtado uses small files to remove the damaged and diseased pulp and irrigates the area with water to wash away any debris. Once all the infected material is removed, Dr. Hurtado either seals the tooth or puts in a temporary filling to protect your tooth until you come back for a permanent crown.

If you have any signs or symptoms of a tooth infection, call Cesar Hurtado DDS or schedule a consultation online.
